Barnes & Noble’s Fighting on Two Fronts (Closing?)

September 6th, 2010

The Barnes & Noble ($BKS) story reminds me of those pictures where they show a big fish swallowing a small fish only to be itself swallowed up by an even bigger one.  Barnes & Noble founder Len Riggio built the largest bookseller on earth by putting thousands of mom & pops under his sword across the country; now he himself is facing his own possible destruction from the twin threats of shareholder activist Ron Burkle and the disintermediation of the digital age.

Twitter breaks story on Discovery Channel gunman

September 5th, 2010

The news of a gunman at the Discovery Channel’s headquarters in Silver Spring indeed traveled fast on Wednesday, but none of it came through radio, TV or newspaper Web sites, at least not at first.

Crash of Va. computer network has wide implications

September 5th, 2010

The data storage unit that failed in a warehouse outside of Richmond last week, wreaking havoc in the computer networks of a number of Virginia agencies for more than a week, is a ubiquitous bit of technology used by virtually every major company and government in the country.

How Hampton Roads missed Earl

September 5th, 2010

Experts said Earl’s impact was missed by 40 miles

Published : Friday, 03 Sep 2010, 7:05 PM EDT

PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) - Experts said Hampton Roads missed Hurricane Earl’s impact by about 40 miles.

Norfolk received some rain, but for the little bit of rain that fell on Friday afternoon, Timothy Gidden didn’t even bother with an umbrella. He said he prepared for the worst though. “Of course we did the usual Walmart run - got everything we needed to get,” said Gidden.

Tight job market is bane of visiting foreign students

September 5th, 2010

VIRGINIA BEACH

When Rinnata Mussina arrived, exhausted by the long trip from her native Kazakhstan, she was prepared to start a summer job at an Oceanfront bike rental shop.

But the 23-year-old college student was told to come back the next week, then the week after, then the week after. The owner told her and a friend who’d traveled to Virginia with her that there wasn’t enough business to hire them, Mussina said.

What Hurricane? Earl Who?

September 3rd, 2010

Hampton Roads geared up for what was thought to be an impressive storm, however it  never really came to pass.  Unless of course, you consider heavy rain fall and a few gusts of wind hitting up to 40 mph in short bursts an impressive storm. Either way, we are thankful we were spared from what Mother Nature could have brought to our local community.

Please let us know how the storm affected you and post pictures if you have some.

NeedLocalHelp.com was bringing local news to our community throughout this storm and will be here for the next.

September 3rd, 2010

Hurricane Earl wasn’t chasing residents away.

While the Category 3 storm churned its way toward Hatteras Island – later dropping to a Category 2 – a fascinated public gathered at the dunes surrounding the Frisco Pier late Thursday afternoon.

About 50 people had gathered there between 4 and 5 p.m. to socialize, drink beer and place bets on the fate of the vulnerable pier. Amateur and professional photographers took pictures of each other taking pictures.
