PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) - Experts said Hampton Roads missed Hurricane Earl’s impact by about 40 miles.
Norfolk received some rain, but for the little bit of rain that fell on Friday afternoon, Timothy Gidden didn’t even bother with an umbrella. He said he prepared for the worst though. “Of course we did the usual Walmart run - got everything we needed to get,” said Gidden.

When Rinnata Mussina arrived, exhausted by the long trip from her native Kazakhstan, she was prepared to start a summer job at an Oceanfront bike rental shop.
But the 23-year-old college student was told to come back the next week, then the week after, then the week after. The owner told her and a friend who’d traveled to Virginia with her that there wasn’t enough business to hire them, Mussina said.

Hampton Roads geared up for what was thought to be an impressive storm, however it never really came to pass. Unless of course, you consider heavy rain fall and a few gusts of wind hitting up to 40 mph in short bursts an impressive storm. Either way, we are thankful we were spared from what Mother Nature could have brought to our local community.
Please let us know how the storm affected you and post pictures if you have some.
NeedLocalHelp.com was bringing local news to our community throughout this storm and will be here for the next.
HATTERAS ISLAND
He had the potential to devastate, but Hurricane Earl has largely spared the Outer Banks.
As of noon today, there had been no reports of widespread major damage or injury on North Carolina’s barrier islands.

Hurricane Earl appears to have spared South Hampton Roads of major problems, so far.
Chesapeake reported no flooding or road closures around 8:30 a.m. People actually made fewer emergency calls than usual overnight, an update from the city said. No evacuations were ordered and no shelters opened.
